Waterloo village is a native american reservation in northwestern NJ. Yes, apparently NJ does in fact have those. It was where I saw cheese the first time
...
at one of the summer jam shows in 1999. The venue is small, its basically a soccer field with a stage, and you can technically see the stage from your car, there's just a chain fence in the way, so those who never bought a ticket and watched it in their dry cars were probably pretty well off. This show and the following night in Long Island (which unfortunately is not on the archive) was to make up for bonnaroo Northeast being cancelled.
The music... it rained a lot this day. And an annoying rhythm of stopping, then starting again once you were dry, followed by a significant storm right before cheese came on ("I think I'll not go barefoot today" -Billy). Kaki King kept whining about getting electricuted and then ended her set early earlier in the day. So, SCI only did one set. It seemed kind of short until they came back out for that fat encore. I think the rain prevented them from bringing any guests out since even the stage was getting pretty wet; considering the opening acts you would think SCI would've brought somebody out.
My first impression of this show and one I still have is there was not enough fiddle. There was not enough fiddle. The Life During Wartime was cool, but it's no This Must Be the Place and it certainly doesn't beat that Burnin' Down the House from Radio City 2002. There is a more complete Life During Wartime from Boston in fall 2003, but neither are that great. It's just cool to hear since Life During Wartime is such a cool Heads song.
The highlight of the show was the Best Feeling - Can't Stop Now. The jam into Can't Stop was really good, and the Best Feeling itself was relatively flawless. The encore was also a nice after standing in the rain for so long, especially Ring of Fire. The Howard wasn't bad at this one either. The Ms. Brown's was bad. Joyful Sound was more sung than chanted, which I like better. I think Keith has started doing that with most of the more recent Joyful Sounds.
Anyway, I'm gonna give this one 3 stars too just cause I am reviewing a lot of shows and can't give everything rave reviews. You technically could skip over this one, but I recommend just downloading every SCI show you can find.
